A native Houstonian, Syd has been a lifelong resident of the city’s Montrose area. She graduated from the University of Houston earning both a B.A. in Art History and a M.A. in Architecture.
In the late 1990’s, while pursuing her long time interest in photography, she investigated the Virtual Reality processes. This led Moen and a group of friends to form Haver Street Studios. “When we first formed our company we were aiming at documenting historic sites which were inaccessible to those with disabilities. However, our focus changed when we landed a contract to integrate VR photography and special effects to create web-based simulations for the petrochemical industry. After our contract ended, we decided to go our separate ways, but the knowledge I gained during that time period was priceless.”
Moen’s past experience in VR photography has led to her current work in stereographic projections, or “little planets.” “Throughout the years I have experimented with numerous artistic media. However, I always come back to photography as the core resource for my self-expression. By creating a “little planet,” I use my experience in photographic imagery and spatial thinking. I am interested in the physical world and in magnifying the abstractions and juxtapositions found within it.”
